During the summer of 2025, we visited Kyrgyzstan on our trip around Asia for almost a month. Here, we want to share the experiences we made during that time. We visited mainly the North of the country and definitely want to return for a grand tour of the south. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me.
The hype, that Kyrgyzstan currently has online is by no means undeserved. The mountainous landscape is spectacular with peaks towering up to 7000 meters with glaciers glistening in the summer sun and wild horses roaming the landscape. Truly, this country is one of the most unique places you can visited.
We started off with a 3-day horse trek to Son-Kol, followed by a 2-day trek on foot in Karakol. As we did not have enough of the mountains at that point we followed up with another 2-day horse trek to Kol Ukok near Kotchkor. After that we enjoyed 2 days in the capital Bishkek, which, with its Soviet Flair positively surprised us.
Something especially worth considering is the time it takes to travel from place to place. The rugged terrain and the poor quality of the road leaves many parts still far away from international tourism.

Bishkek is the Capital and largest City in the country. It surprises with it’s Soviet Flair and mountain panorama.
Travel Budget
Kyrgyzstan can be a very cheap destination depending on what you intend to do. The more tours and treks you do and the further they are from civilization, the more expensive it becomes.
Landscape
The country is over 90% mountainous, with breathtaking valleys and towering mountains around every corner.
Language/Currency
The main language is Kyrgyz, yet practically everybody speaks Russian as well. English is not widely spread, so it is best advised to learn some Russian words to communicate with the locals.
Best time to visit
Summer is the best time to visit Kyrgyzstan. During Spring and Autumn travel is possible as well, yet you may be surprised by a sudden onset of winter at any moment.
