We visited Oman in late March 2025. The country was one of the most memorable experiences of our trip around Asia, even though we only stayed for a short time. It was one of the most positive, as well as one of the more negative memories for us. If you have any questions or want to know more, feel free to contact us.
What do I mean with negative? Islam is very important in the life of the local people and we made the mistake to visit during Ramadan, where every shop and restaurant was closed during the day. But I have to admit, this one is on us and outside of a couple of struggles here and there, we had an amazing time.
The difference to other destinations is the Arab world is quite distinct. People dress very traditionally, the cities look authentically Arab, yet the oil wealth is visible in every direction as well with giant highways and hypermarkets offering modern conveniences.
We were most surprised by the nature the country has to offer. The mountains themselves offer some of the best sunsets we have ever experienced, while the Wadis in the valleys down below cannot be compared to anything else in the world. In my opinion it is worth coming here just for them alone. As any trip without visiting the natural beauty of Oman is in my opinion not the right choice here, I strongly recommend visiting the area with a roadtrip.
Very interesting as well was Oman’s connection to sea faring. Fishery and Boat Building are a huge part of their historic background, as the former Omani Empire was a huge naval power in the Indian Ocean and controlled trade especially in the Arabian Sea, competing with Portugal and later Britain for dominance with their holdings reaching as far as modern day Tanzania.
